Custom Fitted Mouthguards

Mouthguards are flexible dental appliances, usually made of plastic materials, which are worn by athletes to protect the mouth from possible damage.

Mouthguards can prevent injuries to the teeth including breakage or loss that can be painful and disfiguring. There is also protection from injury to the soft tissues like the tongue and the inside of the cheeks. It has been suggested that mouthguards also afford protection from concussions and neck injuries. The mouthguard works by providing a resilient surface that distributes and dissipates forces.

Whenever there is a possibility of contact, either with other competitors (any contact sport) or any immovable objects (squash, skateboarding ...), the wearing of mouthguards is highly recommended.

Many schools and sports leagues require the wearing of mouthguards during both practice and actual competition. Even if this is not mandatory, mouthguards should be worn during active involvement in sports.

Parents in particular should ensure that children, who may not be aware of or fully understand the potential dangers, protect themselves through the use of mouthguards.

Mouthguards come in three general types. Stock mouthguards are pre made, they are the bulkiest and least comfortable. They are also the least protective because they tend to move around the most. Boilable ones are put in hot water and then molded to the teeth in the mouth. Because of how they are formed on the teeth they tend to be thinner there and consequently somewhat less protective. Custom fitted mouthguards, made by a dentist, have the best fit and are the most protective and comfortable.
